    The value of traditional rural landscape and nature protected areas in tourism demand: A study on agritourists' preferences

    This study focuses on how traditional rural landscape and proximity to a Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance (SCI) might influence consumers\u2019 choice of an agritourism farm for a weekend stay. Data were collected in Umbria region\u2019s (Italy) agritourism farms in 2014 by interviewing 160 tourists. Results from a discrete choice experiment reveal that the most important feature affecting the interviewees\u2019 propensity to pay a premium price to stay in an agritourism farm is the well-preserved traditional landscape (willingness to pay 32.32\u20ac/night for two people), followed by the availability of a swimming pool (willingness to pay 20.95\u20ac/night for two people), the proximity to a historical village (willingness to pay 18.37\u20ac/night for two people) and, the location in a Natura 2000 SCI (willingness to pay 13.57\u20ac/night for two people). Furthermore, the results underline how the preservation of the traditional landscape and protection of the surrounding environment play a strategic role in developing agritourism and provide economic benefits to local communities

    Consumers demand for social farming products: An analysis with discrete choice experiments

    This paper analyses the demand for social farming (SF) products. In particular, we investigate the preferences of consumers who buy their products from large retailers, rather than from solidarity purchasing groups or other niche markets using a sample of 225 consumers. In this regard, a discrete choice experiment (DCE) was carried out to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) a premium price for the purchase of a common product (i.e., eggs) from farms that employ disabled people. The attributes considered in our DCE design are the employment of disabled people and two additional attributes which may have ethical implications for the choices. The results indicate that consumers are interested in buying SF products, with about 74% of the sample willing to buy the eggs produced by social farms and the average WTP being equal to \u20ac1.36 for a pack of six eggs. Moreover, the average WTP for the use of labour of disabled people attribute amounted to \u20ac0.69 for a pack of six eggs

    Vacuum heat treatments of titanium porous structures

    Additive manufacturing (AM) of Ti-6Al-4V enables rapid fabrication of complex parts, including porous lattices which are of interest for aerospace, automotive, or biomedical applications, however currently the fatigue resistance of these materials is a critical limitation. Engineering the alloy microstructure provides a promising method for increasing fatigue strength, but conventional heat treatment procedures are known to produce atypical results for AM and porous samples, and must therefore be optimised for these materials. Using vacuum heat treatment, microstructures comparable to those observed for conventional wrought and heat treated alloys were achieved with porous AM Ti-6Al-4V. Fine lamellar microstructures were produced using sub-transus heat treatment at 920 °C, while coarse lamellar microstructures were produced using super-transus heat treatment at 1050 °C or 1200 °C. Increasing the heat treatment temperature increased the elastic modulus from 2552 ± 22 MPa to a maximum of 2968 ± 45 MPa, due to strut sintering increasing the effective strut thickness, and removal of prior ÎČ-grain orientation. Heat treatment eliminated the brittle α’ martensite phase in favour of an α + ÎČ mixture, where the phase boundaries and ÎČ-phase provide greater resistance to crack propagation. Super-transus heat treatments increased the α-lath size which typically reduces crack propagation resistance, however strut sintering reduced surface crack initiation sites, increasing the fatigue strength by 75% from 4.86 MPa for the as-built material to a maximum of 8.51 MPa after 1200 °C heat treatment. This work demonstrates that vacuum heat treatment is effective at tuning the micro- and macro-structure of porous AM Ti-6Al-4V, thereby improving the crucial fatigue resistance

    Frontal brain asymmetries as effective parameters to assess the quality of audiovisual stimuli perception in adult and young cochlear implant users

    How is music perceived by cochlear implant (CI) users? This question arises as "the next step" given the impressive performance obtained by these patients in language perception. Furthermore, how can music perception be evaluated beyond self-report rating, in order to obtain measurable data? To address this question, estimation of the frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha activity imbalance, acquired through a 19-channel EEG cap, appears to be a suitable instrument to measure the approach/withdrawal (AW index) reaction to external stimuli. Specifically, a greater value of AW indicates an increased propensity to stimulus approach, and vice versa a lower one a tendency to withdraw from the stimulus. Additionally, due to prelingually and postlingually deafened pathology acquisition, children and adults, respectively, would probably differ in music perception. The aim of the present study was to investigate children and adult CI users, in unilateral (UCI) and bilateral (BCI) implantation conditions, during three experimental situations of music exposure (normal, distorted and mute). Additionally, a study of functional connectivity patterns within cerebral networks was performed to investigate functioning patterns in different experimental populations. As a general result, congruency among patterns between BCI patients and control (CTRL) subjects was seen, characterised by lowest values for the distorted condition (vs. normal and mute conditions) in the AW index and in the connectivity analysis. Additionally, the normal and distorted conditions were significantly different in CI and CTRL adults, and in CTRL children, but not in CI children. These results suggest a higher capacity of discrimination and approach motivation towards normal music in CTRL and BCI subjects, but not for UCI patients. Therefore, for perception of music CTRL and BCI participants appear more similar than UCI subjects, as estimated by measurable and not self-reported parameters

    Neuroelectrical correlates of trustworthiness and dominance judgments related to the observation of political candidates

    The present research investigates the neurophysiological activity elicited by fast observations of faces of real candidates during simulated political elections. We used simultaneous recording of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals as well as galvanic skin response (GSR) and heart rate (HR) as measurements of central and autonomic nervous systems. Twenty healthy subjects were asked to give judgments on dominance, trustworthiness, and a preference of vote related to the politicians' faces. We used high-resolution EEG techniques to map statistical differences of power spectral density (PSD) cortical activity onto a realistic head model as well as partial directed coherence (PDC) and graph theory metrics to estimate the functional connectivity networks and investigate the role of cortical regions of interest (ROIs).     Fragrance materials (FMs) affect the larval development of the copepod Acartia tonsa: An emerging issue for marine ecosystems

    Fragrance materials (FMs) are used in a variety of detergents and cosmetics, including household and personal care products. Despite their widespread use and the growing evidence of their occurrence in surface waters worldwide, very little is known about their toxicity towards marine species, including a key component of the marine food webs such as copepods. Thus, we investigated the toxicity of six of the more long-lasting and stable commercial fragrances, including Amyl Salicylate (AMY), Oranger Crystals (ORA), Hexyl Salicylate (HEX), Ambrofix (AMB), Peonile (PEO), and Benzyl Salicylate (BZS), to assess their ability to impair the larval development of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa. FMs inhibited the development of A. tonsa significantly at concentrations by far lower than the effect-concentrations reported in the literature for aquatic species. The more toxic FMs were HEX (EC50 = 57 ng L−1), AMY (EC50 = 131 ng L−1) and ORA (EC50 = 766 ng L−1), while the other three compounds exerted toxic effects at concentrations higher than 1000 ng L−1 (LOEC at 1000 ng L−1 for PEO and BZS, and at 10,000 ng L−1 for AMB). Early life-stage mortality was unaffected by FMs at all the tested concentrations. A comparison with water concentrations of FMs reported in the literature confirmed that FMs, especially HEX and AMY, may act as contaminants of potential concern in many aquatic habitats, including urban areas and remote and polar environments

    Late Holocene records of fire and human presence in New Zealand

    New Zealand, and the South Island in particular, can be considered an excellent test site for the study of the\ud early impact of humans on the environment for two main reasons: the Polynesian settlement occurred only\ud about 700-800 y BP and resulted in abrupt and huge landscape modifications. Burning forest for land clearance\ud impacted dramatically on an ecosystem that was not adapted to fire, changing the composition of the vegetation\ud as documented by sedimentary charcoal and pollen records. Although charcoal data give incontrovertible\ud evidence of some unprecedented fire events right after the arrival of the Maori, its significance as a tracer for local\ud and anthropogenic fire events has been questioned, stressing the need for new markers to confirm and complete the information about human presence and its effective impact.\ud In the present work, faecal sterols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were individuated as suitable\ud molecular markers and analyzed by GC-MS in a sediment core from Lake Kirkpatrick, located in the Lake\ud Wakatipu catchment at 570 m a.s.l. in the South Island of New Zealand. Coprostanol accounts for about 60%\ud of total sterol content in human faeces, being much less relevant in animal dejections. Together with its\ud degradation product epi-coprostanol, it is well conserved in sedimentary archives and can be highly useful in\ud paleoenvironmental reconstructions of human settlements. PAHs are produced in relevant amounts by combustion in conditions of oxygen depletion, and diagnostic ratios (DR) between specific molecules can be used for inferring fuel and sources.\ud The charcoal record for Lake Kirkpatrick shows major fire episodes around AD 1350, confirmed by corresponding high levels of PAHs ascribable to biomass burning (as further evidenced by DR) at c. AD 1350. Moreover, the same trend is observed also in the fluxes of coprostanol and epi-coprostanol, whose sum results in two peaks at c. AD 1346 and 1351. This finding confirms not only the massive presence of humans in the area and the large use of fire at the time, but also complements and refines the reconstructions enabled by charcoal analysis

    Parallaxes of southern extremely cool objects III : 118 L and T dwarfs

    We present new results from the Parallaxes of Southern Extremely Cool dwarfs program to measure parallaxes, proper motions and multiepoch photometry of L and early T dwarfs. The observations were made on 108 nights over the course of 8 yr using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope. We present 118 new parallaxes of L and T dwarfs of which 52 have no published values and 24 of the 66 published values are preliminary estimates from this program. The parallax precision varies from 1.0 to 15.5mas with a median of 3.8mas. We find evidence for two objects with long term photometric variation and 24 new moving group candidates. We cross-match our sample to published photometric catalogues and find standard magnitudes in up to 16 pass-bands from which we build spectral energy distributions and H-R diagrams. This allows us to confirm the theoretically anticipated minimum in radius between stars and brown dwarfs across the hydrogen burning minimum mass. We find the minimum occurs between L2 and L6 and verify the predicted steep dependence of radius in the hydrogen burning regime and the gentle rise into the degenerate brown dwarf regime. We find a relatively young age of ~2 Gyr from the kinematics of our sample.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    PCDD/Fs in sediments of Central Vietnam coastal lagoons: In search of TCDD

    Samples from nine Central Vietnam coastal lagoons, together with three soils and sediments collected in 24 two freshwater reservoirs of the Thua Thien-HuĂ© province, were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p- 25 dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Total concentrations are low, from 192 to 2912 pg g1 and depth 26 profiles in Tam Giang-Cau Hai (TG-CH) sediment cores show only minor changes over time in PCDD/F 27 input and composition. Octachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) is the prevailing congener (approximately 28 90%), indicating combustion as the main PCDD/F source to these coastal systems, whereas natural forma- 29 tion might be partly responsible for the presence at depth. 2,3,7,8-Tetrachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), 30 largely sprayed together with Agent Orange over the study areas during the war (1961–1971), is absent 31 or very low. This result supports the hypothesis of strong degradation soon after spraying.
